Posted @withregram • @arinyoon Today is my last Posted @withregram • @arinyoon Today is my last day @tallgrassartistresidency. I came there thinking I would discover something about my connection to this landscape and to my memories over time through photography and exploration, but I ended up just coming up with new questions.

I am grateful for this opportunity to be able to create something new in this tallgrass prairie of which only 4% remains, adding to this rich history. I have so much more to learn and it has so much knowledge to give.

Thank you Kelly, Bill & Julia, Derek & Katherine, Tia & Matt, Philip and Eric for your hospitality and support in connecting artists with this very special place.

Posted @withregram • @arinyoon The kids and I have tried three times to take photos over at Tallgrass National Preserve. The first two times, it started raining as soon as we got there. Even though you can see so far out in this landscape, the weather is still somehow unpredictable. Today the weather was perfect- overcast and cool breezes carving out shapes in the tall grass. But on our path, we encountered a wild bison grazing contently not really wanting to be disturbed.

So we’ve been exploring @matfieldstation, interacting with @billmcbridesculptor’s natural sculptures along the PrairyArt Path, taking turns taking pictures. The kids do their own interventions with bubbles and stick-on googly eyes and gems. They’ve also been foraging for flowers and obsessing over wild garlic. And engaging in more imaginative play which makes me happy.

Looking forward to Saturday when we will meet some local families and see what they create with what they find in nature.

Posted @withregram • @arinyoon I passed through Posted @withregram • @arinyoon I passed through the Flint Hills while on assignment in February right after a snowstorm and the roads were still icy. I quickly photographed the frozen prairie but I knew I wanted to come back.

What draws me back to this land is I immigrated here when I was 5 years old and my brother was 7, the same ages as my children now. We moved to Warrensburg, Missouri from Seoul, South Korea. I was transported from a cityscape to the American midwest. The vastness of the prairie left an impression on me.

Today when we were walking Mila asked me, “Mom, are we in a dream? Are we?” I’ll be exploring my connection to this land as an immigrant, to my family, my memories and my dreams during my time here.
