Born in China and raised among artists, Hong received rigorous academic training in fine style Chinese ink painting at the prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. After moving to the United States in 1996, she earned an MA at California State University, Sacramento in 2002, and an MFA from the University of California, Davis in 2004. Upon completing her graduate work, Hong continued painting in ink but also combined Chinese techniques and conventions with new materials like charcoal and larger formats. In 2000, She developed her own “Hair” style that resulted in aesthetically rich and intellectually compelling works.  Hong has been living in Lawrence, Kansas with her family since finishing her MFA in 2004.
